Christmas Vacation

Today at exactly 4:30 p.m., I began my Christmas vacation.  I am off until the new year. Whoohoo!

I was so excited. The only thing on my mind on the drive home was slipping into my pjs, pouring a glass of wine, turning on some Christmas music and relaxing on the sofa watching the Christmas tree spin around.  {Sigh} All I managed to do once home was put on my pjs. The shower made me a bit too relaxed. So much so that I am laying in bed, under the covers, knowing that soon and very soon I will be in dreamland.

Guess my origianal plans are on hold for another evening. Maybe tomorrow.

A Visit to 34th Street

Last night some friends and I decided to go into the city and see the lights on Baltimore's 34th Street.

Entertaining At Christmas

I love entertaining at Christmas.  Every Christmas Eve, I invite my entire family and family friends over for an evening of good food and good times.  It's also the only time when everyone gets to see each other as everyday life tends to keep some away throughout the rest of the year.

I started this tradition about 8 years ago.  It was something that my grandmother used to do but as she got older the tradition sort of fell by the waist side. So I thought I would bring it back.  What started out as a small group of 16 people sitting down at dinner has now grown to 40 plus buffet dinner.

Christmas Eve is the perfect time for me to have family dinner because Christmas day is busy for folks.  Some family members may have plans to spend Christmas with their spouse's family or those with little ones would rather stay at home so that the kids could enjoy playing with their presents.  I remember being a little girl and my parents dragging me and my brother out the house to go visit my grandfather's sister for Christmas dinner.  It always made my brother and I so mad because we would rather stay home and play with our toys. Selfish I know, but we were kids and that's how some kids are.  Plus it was so boring. Dear great auntie did give us some cool gifts though.

I spend months getting ready for this day - all thanks to Organized Christmas and Magical Holiday Home. I design a budget, plan a menu, make guest list, send out invitations... I go all out.  Guests usually start arriving about 6 in the evening.  We say the blessing before dinner.  After dinner we mingle a bit - the kids hang out in the guest room where I have games out for them and the tv set up for watching movies.  Later we open gifts. After the gifts we mingle some more and eat more.  Like I've said before, some of the family don't get to see each other much throughout the year so on this night there's a lot of catching up going on.  There's also lots of memories being captured by yours truly.  The house is usually empty by midnight.  My guests are full and happy and I am giddy like a little kid.  So happy that once again, the holidays with family was a success.

My family has come to expect being at my house Christmas Eve.  When asked, I tell them that as long as I'm physically able to and have the passion, it will continue.  I doubt that the passion will ever go away.  As far as being physically able, that remains to be seen.

Christmas Journaling - Christmas Carols

Keep the traditional or please write some new one?

What's wrong with the traditional songs?  Nothing!  To me the traditional Christmas songs are an important part of the holiday season.  They tell us stories of how and why we celebrate such a joyous ocassion.

Now that being said, I want to also say that I like the new, more hip Christmas songs as well.  I thought I had heard every Christmas song there was, and am always amazed when I hear something new or different.  For a long time I only knew of the songs my parents, aunts and uncles used to play regularly when I was a kid and the songs sung in church.  It wasn't until I got older I began find out about other kinds of Christmas music.

I start playing Christmas tunes the day after Thanksgiving. I consider myself to be well rounded and will listen to any kind of holiday tunes. It depends on what mood I'm in.  Like when I'm enjoying a nice evening at home just lying around on the sofa, gazing at the Christmas tree and all the decorations, I usually play instrumental tunes.  If I'm sipping on a glass of wine I'll spice up the music with some holiday jazz.  That get's my fingers snapping.

When I'm cleaning and getting the house ready for decorating, I put on the old R&B Christmas classics: The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, Nat King Cole, etc.  Those songs always remind me of when my family would all gather at my grandma's house.  She lived in a little apartment and one of my uncles and his family lived directly under her in their apartment. Somehow we all fitted in there nice and snugged (counting 8 siblings, their spouses/friends and us kids).  One uncle and one aunt are no longer here, and the family has grown over the years with great grandkids and great-great grandkids.  And now the family gathers at my little apartment. :-)

Now when I'm sitting at the computer (like now) I tune into Merry Christmas Radio and when I'm wrapping gifts, baking cookies or taking a drive around the neighborhood looking at the lights, I usually turn on the radio where the local station plays Christmas music nonstop til New Year's Day.  The radio is where I heard 'Grandma Got Runover By A Reindeer' and Porky Pig's version of 'Blue Christmas'.  That Porky Pig song always crack me up.  I remember the first time I heard it. It was about 2:00 in the morning during the holidays.  I was on the highway on my way home from my second job (it was parttime) when it came on the radio.  I was in tears by the time the song ended. I had never heard such a crazy song before.
Then there's a couple that I tear-up a little whenever they come on the radio.  One is "Christmas Shoes".  The other is actually a narration, when Santa meets a soldier during a war. I don't know the name of it, but everytime I hear it, I just sigh and begin to think about all those soldiers fighting in wars, not being home with their families for the holidays.

I have quite a few favorite holiday songs: "Let It Snow," by Boys II Men; "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas," by Burl Ives; "Winter Wonderland," by The Eurythmics - to name a few.  "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas", by James Taylor, has become one of my favorite Christmas songs (I like Taylor anyway and have several of his cd's).  His version of the song gives me a warm feeling inside and I especially love the video.  It makes me think about my family coming altogether Christmas Eve. A new tradition I started about 7 or 8 years ago. It's the only time everyone gets to see everyone all at once.  A few months ago I finally broke down and downloaded the entire album  and have been playing it ever since.

Merry Christmas

It's finally here! It's Christmas Day!

I'm lying in bed watching tv, recoupperating from last night. About 40+ family members were in my apartment. It was. Great. You could barely move around. People were making comments about having the heat on. I told them I don't have the heat on. It's you people. When evryone was gone I looked at the thermostat - it read 79 deg. LOL! I had to crack open my window when I finally went to bed. I zonked out almost immediately.

Dinner started around 6:30. There was plenty to eat - spiral ham, roast beef, mac & cheese, meatballs, collard greens, shrimp salad, deviled eggs, bbq seasoned and carribean style wingettes, potatoe salad and fresh baked rolls. For appetizers I served baked crab rangoon, blt dip ( a recipe I got from Cathymac - MHH) with asiago cheese & vegetable crackers (What a great combination) and fruit. For desert there was red velvet cake, chocolate cake, and a variety of cookies.

After everyone was done eating and letting their stomachs settle a little, we opened gifts. I started a new tradition last year where I hand out my gifts to everyone and then have them all open their gifts at one time while I record them with my camera. I think everyone loved what they got. I listen to them throughout the year and take notes unbeknowns to them.

I received some great gifts as well. I got a really nice Baltimore Ravens fleece throw, a pretty top, one of those snuggies with matching slippers, nice scented diffusers, a glass salad bowl set, my middle niece made me some home-made cookies (yummy), and something I really needed - flatware. I also received several Walmart gift cards which will be used tomorrow. I also got a nice carrying bag for my new portable Dvd player. I can't remember everything but I love them all. I'm not hard to please. I appreciate everything I get.

I'm posting from my phone so when I get back to work (in the new year) I will post pictures.

One of my cousins is having dinner at her house today, so I may go there. On Christmas Day I usually just lounge around the house, relaxing, taking it easy.

I think I'm going to pour me a glass of milk and eat a few of my nieces homemade cookies. Ta ta for now!

Happy CIJ - July 10th

Well it's Friday and I for one am glad. It's been a very long week.

I've been working on my menu for our Christmas Eve family gathering. Every year I try to serve something different from the previoys year. I never do turkey because my family is usually good and sick of it from the Thanksgiving holiday. (LOL!)
So here's what I've decided on:
  • Saucey country ribs (I got this recipe from Better Homes and Gardens. I will use beef ribs instead of pork though.)
  • Honey baked spiral ham
  • Wingette platter (three different flavors)
  • Collard greens
  • Macaroni & cheese
  • Deviled eggs
  • Cesar salad
  • Seafood salad
  • Potato salad
  • Fresh baked rolls
Appetizers:
  • BLT dip (A recipe I got from Cathymac, a fellow MHHer)
  • Baked crab rangoo
Desserts:
  • Holiday cake shaped like a snowman
  • Homemade cookies
  • Oreo Balls
My best friend doesn't know it yet but she is going to do my snowman cake (LOL!) She's been taking baking lessons and is doing very well.
Last night while playing on the computer, I had an idea. This years invitations will be in the form of a CD/DVD. My plan is to put together a slideshow of photos from past Christmases set to a Christmas song. Then at the end of the slideshow will be the information inviting them to this year’s Christmas Eve dinner. I think that everyone will enjoy getting the cd. Plus they will have the memories. I’m pretty excited about this myself. Now I just need to decide on a clever label for the cover. TTFN!

CIJ - July 9th

The weather has been extremely cool the last two mornings/nights. One would think it's fall instead of summer. With these cool temps I'm feeling more anxious for the holidays to get here. The weather also has me thinking about hosting breakfast in early December. I would get to have my family altogether twice in one month instead of the one time (which is Christmas Eve).

Here's The Plan

Decide on a date
Create guest list
Create and print invitations
Decide on a menu
Come up with some cute 'favors' for guests to take home

I will keep you posted.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday.

I've just returned to work after taking a well deserved two-week vacation. I tell you, it was hard for me to come back. I didn't sleep a wink last night, much as I tried. For two weeks I sat up late until the wheee hours in the morning and slept until 12 or 1 in the afternoon. It was great!

Let me tell you all about my time off. It was my last week before the holidays and I had just left work. I was on my way to pick up a few things for my Christmas Eve family dinner when I got a call that my boyfriend was in a car accident. He was hit by a SUV which caused him to cross the medium strip and get hit by a tractor trailer. I was beside myself. Thank God he was able to walk away from the wreckage with only a sore arm and back. Needless to say the car was totaled. He only had the car for two months. He's hoping to get a new one in the next few weeks.

The days leading up to Christmas Eve were very busy, exciting and a little painful. I spent all day Saturday baking. I made several different kinds of cookies: chocolate chip, eggnog, sugar, gingerbread, oatmeal/raisin, butter cookies with chopped pecans, peanut butter, thumbprint with the chocolate bells in the center and chocolate cookies from the Martha Stewart cake mix I received as a gift from one of my co-workers. The mix turned out great! I followed the instructions another co-worker gave me and added white chocolate and peanut butter chips to the dough. The cookies were so moist and great with a cold glass of milk. I didn't get a chance to make more Oreo Balls and none of my guest seemed to noticed. Sunday I was able to sleep in til about noon. Once up I ran through my preparation checklist and got a head start on cooking my vegetables in the crock pot, setting the table, getting out the serving trays and such. I went into the hall closet to grab another cookie tin from a box that was sitting on the top shelf when all of a sudden I was hit dead center in the nose by a falling object. It was candle plate which I had forgotten I had sat on top of the box when I put it in the closet. Talking about pain! The plate hit my nose so hard that it made a dent. I never even saw it coming - it happened so fast. I thought I had broken my nose and was going to have to spend hours in the emergency room. I just knew I'd be walking around with a big bandage across my face Christmas Eve. I quickly filled a plastic bag with ice and placed it on my nose to keep it from swelling. The soreness lasted for days. Fortunately it was not broken and no bleeding occurred.

Christmas Eve I woke up very early to finish the last bit of cooking. Then I had to head out to pick up my uncle and the Bruce Lee wings from Cross Street Market. Once back home I managed to get in a little time to relax before my guests arrived.

It was a great night! Everyone enjoyed the food I prepared. So much so that there were no leftovers for me to put away. They especially like the Bruce Lee Wings. For most of the guests it was their first time eating them. I was happy about that. This year instead of everyone opening their gifts one by one (which takes a long time as I have about 40 guests). I had everyone open their gifts at the same time and recorded them opening their gifts with my digital camera. I think everyone was happy with their gifts. The kids kept themselves occupied in the guest room playing the games that I put out for them. The only times they came out of that room was to eat and open gifts. Next year I think I will set up the dvd player so that they can watch movies if they like. Before the night ended I got everyone around the tree for the group picture.

Christmas day I laid in bed the entire day. I was wiped out. I watched movies, took lots of naps and occasionally got up to use the bathroom. I didn't get an appetite until very late Christmas night. After all of that cooking I could not eat Christmas Eve. Fortunately my best friend made me a plate, wrapped it up and put in the fridge for me.

The day after Christmas I was up and out early hitting the stores for those sales. The deals were fantastic. Not only did I get superb bargains on decorations but I already have a few gifts for next year. One store I went to, Michael's was selling items at 50 - 70% off. I found a really large wreath for only $8 and holiday picks to decorate the wreath for $.17 each. The wreath will hang from my balcony next year. I found berry and pine cone garland for $2.99 (originally $9.99). Of course I had to check out my favorite store - Dollar Tree - where everything was $.50. I also checked out Walmart where I picked up woodland ornaments (to add to the tree for the balcony) at half off, gift boxes and bags, tissue paper, pine garland for $1.50 (will mix them with the berry and pine cone garland) and a 12" Santa for $5. At Walgreens all of their Christmas stuff was marked 75% off. There I picked up of couple boxes of 100 ct. lights for $1. All-in-all I spent about $150 for everything. Love a sale.

What's Next!?

I know Halloween hasn't arrived yet but I'm now getting ready for Thanksgiving. I went to a Halloween bash this past weekend which was a blast. So as far as I'm concerned I'm done with Halloween (lol).

Anyway seems Im not the only one thinking about Thanksgiving Day. I spent Sunday writing up my menu and talking to folks about what dishes they are bringing. This year my parents and a few other relatives and friends will gather at my house. My parents will make sweet potato pies, and my best friend will make a cake shaped like a turkey. She's very crafty with cakes. Along with the traditional dishes - turkey, ham, etc.- I will be making what's become a family favorite, crab stuffing.

On Nov. 1st, the Thanksgiving Countdown will start at Magical Holiday Home and Organized Christmas. I for one am excited. There will be quite a bit to do in the three weeks leading up to the big day. The first week will be getting organized. I have put together a fall notebook which contains a section dedicated to Thanksgiving. In it I have the countdown, shopping lists, menu planner, recipes, everything I'll need to be ready. Will keep you updated on how things are going.

What a Wonderful Time!

Well Saturday I had my harvest dinner party and it was a success. My guests really enjoyed themselves. They especially liked the party favors I handed out. Everyone, including the men put on the masks I made.

The food was setup buffet style. I added lifts so that the food sat at different heights and covered the table with a fall leaf tablecloth. I mixed silk leaves and mini pumpkins/gourds inbetween the dishes and lit tapered candles which gave the table a nice affect. Unfortunately, I don't have a photo to share. I was so busy making sure everything was in order, that I forgot to take pictures. When I thought of it, it was hours later which by then was too late. I served, appetizers: a fruit platter (which was the tables centerpiece), peppered herb cheese balls and bake crab rangoon. The main dishes were: chili, pulled pork, fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, green beans, collard greens, potato salad and cornbread. For desert there was apple pie and oreo cheesecake. On my bar I set up the drinks for making cocktails and next to the bar in a cooler were soda and beer.

The weather was soo beautiful too. Some of the guests sat out on the balcony to eat and congregate. Then when the sun went down I turned on the orange lights and lit the candles on the chandeliers. We played cards and danced until midnight.

For me, the best part was I didn't have to clean up afterwards. My bf and a couple of my guests took care of everything. A perfect ending to a perfect evening. Now that that's over it's time to get ready for Thanksgiving (along with preparing for Christmas).

It's Almost Party Time!

This Saturday I'm hosting a Harvest Dinner Party. I'm so excited. I've been following the countdown at Organized Christmas, a very special site to me. I have my menu all planned and my apartment is decorated for the season. I decorated plain orange gift bags by gluing silk leaves around the top edges. Inside will be harvest masks (another DIY craft), fall crackers - like the Christmas crackers but I used fall wrapping/tissue paper, a thank you note and a gag gift for fun. I'm expecting it to be a wonderful evening. Plus the weather will be nice so folks can mingle out onto the patio.
